by Thanh Binh Nguyen & Jon Bibby (Vallourec Tubes)
The purpose of this article is to illustrate new developments in casing tubing technologies to help Oil & Gas operators in drilling and completion. Vallourec provides: Prime Mapping yard service to help packer placement, cement displacement operations and casing wear mitigation; Pre-Installed Cable Protector - reduces protector installation time on rig floor, improves safety & reduces logistics; Smartengo Running Expert solution to monitor casing tubing running by a digital application.
Prime Mapping services: Vallourec technicians use a portable robot at the operator’s yard to measure full pipe length geometry data; then segregate the joints and enhance string tally with actual pipe capacity. Pre-Installed Cable Protectors: Vallourec provides a new cable protector design, assembled and placed on a tubular joint in the pipe yard. The joints are transported to the rig and made up as usual, with only one final bolt tighten step on rig floor. Smartengo Running Expert is a 4.0 technology that improves your pipe running thanks to full tubular traceability through datamatrix and barcodes. The system ensures that the run-in-hole items are run according to the planned sequence - with real-time recording of the string by a camera or Tablet on the rig floor.
The chosen pipes for packer placement ensure the fit and seal-abilities thanks to their full-length ID in packer thresholds and lowest out-of-roundness; Tally is enhanced with pipe volume for cement displacement; thickest pipes at positioned at critical segment to mitigate casing wear. Several jobs for IOCs, NOCs in Europe, Middle East and America have proven this solution’s utility. Pre-Installed Cable Protector: several installation steps are moved from the rotary table to pipe yards, reducing RIH time, eliminating logistics and improving safety. Cable installation on the rig floor requires just 1 person. First commercial equipment was run in hole in an IOC’s offshore well in 2022. Smartengo Running Expert (SRE): It has been deployed to dozen Major NOCs and IOCs globally, with over 80 jobs records. Its main features are a safer, faster and accurate deck-receipt; digital tally management; real-time visibility of run-in-hole, with watchdog alerts ensuring the running sequence is followed; stoppages recording; post-job digital dashboard allows for continuous improvement and rig performance comparison of different runs/wells. In conclusion, all three innovation solutions above help operators to save rig time, eliminate hazards, reduce human errors, and enhance well performances.
The solutions above show the willingness of operators and OCTG suppliers to innovate equipment design, move operations to yards, and implement digital application.
